Artist Statement
Hybrid
forms provide useful metaphors with
which to explore the dazzling complexity and exquisite order of the
world
around us. I like to mix images from
various cultures, blend human and animal shapes, bring different media
together, and draw on both painterly and sculptural vocabulary. I use the resulting textures, colors and
shapes to respond to elements and events that I find both
scientifically
fascinating and emotionally moving.
This often produces artwork that is sometimes difficult to
define and
that appears ready to climb off its base or slide into other dimensions.
Artist Bio
I was born in New York City in 1960 but grew up in various
towns near Boston. My father, a
Holocaust survivor, was a psychoanalyst who also painted and sculpted
abstracted works. My mother is Haitian
and paints large figures or fanciful birds in the colorful, naïve style
of the
Caribbean.
Originally
my professional interests were in the sciences. I
attended Wellesley College (’82 BA in Astronomy) and Clark
University (’90 BS in Computer Science), before deciding to become a
professional artist, and attending The Art Institute of Boston at
Lesley
University (’08 MFA in Visual Arts).
I
currently work in Boston and in Natick Massachusetts.
While I continue to paint in acrylics or oils on canvas or
paper,
and also produce original digital prints, my most recent works are
primarily of
clay, wood, marble, or mixed media sculpture that blend forms inspired
by any
number of things from the laws of physic to mythical creatures.
